Final Things Fall Apart Paper has MAJOR CHANGES (see below)
Directions: We have discussed a number of interesting aspects of Things Fall Apart throughout the course of this unit both with our small group work and our wikispaces. Your job is to identify your own thesis statement that will disect the book on a deeper level. This paper will absolutely require a tremendous amount of support (direct quotes) from the book and could potentially include supplemental support from any of our other sources depending on your topic. This paper is an assessment of both your reading and your writing skills so for those of you who have not fully read this book, you will probably have a more difficult time, but you probably already know that.
Make a list of some of the conversations that we have had in class regarding Okonkwo, colonization, and traditions. Consider why Achebe felt so compelled to write this novel. Why is this novel important?
10 Point Wikispace: Post and respond to your wikispace discussion board. I've been helping a LOT of essays out, so use my help before the break. I'll be out of the country from Dec 29-January 4. Assignment: This is a 2 page min/max paper which will rely heavily on blending quotes, sophisticated sentence delivery, and the development of a rich and challenging thesis.
Due January 5: Your paper is due. Bring an electronic versionof your paper as well as a typed paper copy because we are going to the computer lab to do a peer edit. You will conference with me about your wikispace and your paper. I will need the address for your wikispace that day. January 6: Final draft of the paper will be due. We will be going to the computer lab to help you add finishing touches to your wikispace with your group. January 8: We will discuss the midterm essay that will mimic the essay we read by Mark Twain in class.
and play around with thesis ideas. January 11: We will shape your satirical midterm essay.
Your midterm exam has changed:
On Thursday, January 14 (first exam) you and your group will present your wikispace to the class and endure a few questions from yours truly. Your ability to answer these questions will factor into your wikispace grade.
Also, you will have a two page min/max paper due that will be focused solely on your country. (This is a change from the cross-country comparison we were initially planning on doing). It will be fun to write because you are going to write from the perspective of 'someone' related to your country and you wil be writing with a very sarcastic voice combined with specifics that you learned from your research.
The Wikispace will go on the second marking period as originally planned, but the essay will be your midterm grade.
If you do not show up for your midterm presentation or if you are late to the midterm, then you will earn a zero for both.
